Meteorological Balloons Utilized to Smuggle Tobacco Products Shut Down Lithuanian Airport
Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
